Prayer

By: Grace Metzger

But when you pray, go into your
room and shut the door and pray to
your Father who is in secret. And your
Father who sees in secret will reward you.
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭6‬:‭6‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Prayer has been a focus this year for many churches and believers that I know. The topic of prayer keeps coming up everywhere I look and it has been heavy on my mind. Prayer is always such an interesting topic to me because how important it is and how little we actually seem to do it.

Pray without ceasing.
‭‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭5‬:‭17‬ ‭ESV‬‬

The Bible talks a lot about prayer and even commands us in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 to pray without ceasing. But what does praying without ceasing even mean? Just to clarify I don’t believe the Bible is telling us to spend the rest of our lives doing nothing but bowing down and praying. As great as that would be, I believe God is trying to tell us that prayer doesn’t have to be this scheduled thing where you can only do it before you eat or at church. God is trying to tell us how we need to incorporate prayer into our daily lives, to pray throughout the day.

Incorporating prayer into our daily lives sounds easy in theory, but in practice it might be harder for you than you thought. There might come a day when you’re angry, tired, and too worn out from life that praying to God seems difficult. So how can we stay consistent in our prayer life even when those tough days arise?

Continue steadfastly in prayer,
being watchful in it with thanksgiving.
‭‭Colossians‬ ‭4‬:‭2‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Staying consistent in our prayer life is something that I have been working on this week. I’ve challenged myself to stay consistent in my prayer no matter what life throws at me. What has helped me was making myself start my prayer off in thanksgiving, thanking God for all the wonderful things He’s done. When I focus on the good, the bad parts of life don’t seem that big anymore, instead I can replace all the negative with a feeling of joy, knowing the great things God has done for me.

By doing this it made me more excited to pray. When I think back that every time I have done this in the past, I come out of it happier and more positive. So often in prayer we are so focused on complaining or requesting something from God that we end up forgetting all the good things He already has done for us!

I challenge you this week to start your prayers in thanksgiving, whether it’s thanking God that you didn’t get stuck in traffic, had time to make coffee this morning, or even that you woke up today! Find something to be thankful for and voice your thanks to God!

Discussion:
1. Do you spend part of your prayer time in thanksgiving?
2. What is something you can thank God for right now?
