The Bestest Day

 By: Joanne Viola

“This is the day the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it.”
(Psalm 118: 24, NLT)

As I facetime with our granddaughter, she announces excitedly, “This is the bestest day ever!”

There is always a “bestest day” with young children as they discover something new around them. This particular day it was due to experiencing her first ride on a school bus. “A real live school bus!”

The change of seasons is my favorite part of living in New England. Do I have a favorite season? No, not really, as I would not want to give up any one of them.

It’s autumn – the seasons are changing once again. It continually amazes me to see the sunrise in a different spot over the tops of the trees out back of our house. The shadows lengthening in the grass. The smell of autumn as leaves dry and get ready to fall from their appointed branches. The stunning display of colors – varied in their hues and brilliance.

One cannot even describe the comfort of the smell of the heat coming up for the very first time each fall.

Each sight, smell, and thought are a reminder of the creativity and care of our God towards His people. Faithfully. Tenderly.

While all else around us changes, He stays the same.

And maybe that is the very words He whispers over us as we shift from season to season.

“I am the Lord, and I do not change.” (Malachi 3:6, NLT)
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8, NLT)
“He [God our Father] never changes or casts a shifting shadow.” (James 1:17b, NLT)

Our God and Savior always remains the same. His message of Good News constant. Earthly leaders may come and go, but our God remains the same. We can be certain of His unchanging nature. We can trust His help, His grace, His mercy, His power, and His guidance always to be there for us.

“Write it on your heart that every day is the best day of the year.”
(Ralph Waldo Emerson)

Reflection:
What makes for a best day for you? Try and take note of the way God makes Himself present to you.

  1. I try to take the "best" moment of a day and use it to define my day. One day last week I was sitting at my counter, encouraging a DIL. She'd brought her cake she made (using my recipe) over to icing because this is new and she wanted my help/encouragement. That was a bestest moment. Moments with the grands. Saturday, I listened to the wind in the trees as the sun shine orange and yellow - and I read on the porch - it was a bestest day, too! I am glad that though what makes my best days may change, God does not!
