Give Him praise anyway. You might just be sitting on answered prayer and don’t know it yet.
This was my takeaway leaving an appointment with a gastrointestinal specialist with my now 18-month-old micro preemie.
My little miracle arrived at 24 weeks 3 days weighing 1 pound 7 ounces. He endured many challenges during his 5-month NICU stay, one of the last being that he developed a severe milk protein allergy. The symptoms he exhibited caused his doctors to fear the worst, necrotizing enterocolitis, a disease that can be fatal in premature infants. By grace, it was “just” a milk protein allergy. This delayed our discharge, resulted in extreme dietary restrictions, and required follow up with a GI specialist.
At the end of this latest appointment, our specialist looked at us and said, “this is bittersweet for me, because I won’t get to see him anymore, but there is no reason for me to continue seeing him.”
It sunk in on the car ride home: God caused this little body to heal and outgrow that severe allergy before a doctor could quantify it. The healing, the resolution of the problem, happened weeks before the doctor could identify it. God had already handled it.
What a reminder to give Him praise anyway, even before we see in front of us what we are asking for. Who knows what miracles or answered prayers we are sitting on. Could it be that God has already come through, it just remains to be identified?
It reminds me of Jesus healing a man in Matthew:
2 And behold, a leper came to him and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” 3 And Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. 4 And Jesus said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a proof to them.”
Matthew 8:2-4 ESV
A priest was needed to confirm healing of leprous diseases. But it is not a priest, nor a doctor, whose confirmation brings healing. It is God who heals.
Who knows but that you may have already received an answer to prayer. Give Him praise!
Reflection:
Has it ever taken some kind of confirmation before you were able to see God’s intervention? For what are you waiting on God? What would change if you gave Him praise in advance?
