A Heart Like Mary in Martha’s World

By: Paula Short

“Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”  “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things,  but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:40-42— NIV

In the whirlwind of life, it can be challenging to maintain a heart like Mary’s - one that is focused on Jesus and filled with peace. We often find ourselves caught up in Martha’s busyness, juggling responsibilities and trying to do everything. But Jesus reminds us that there is a better way.

The Two Sisters

The story of Mary and Martha in Luke 10:38-42 beautifully illustrates this contrast. Martha, the diligent sister, was busy preparing a meal for Jesus and His disciples. Mary, on the other hand, chose to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen to His words. When Martha became overwhelmed, she complained to Jesus, asking Him to tell Mary to help her. Jesus gently corrected her, saying, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed: Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:41-42).

Choosing the Better Part

Mary’s choice to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen to His words is a powerful reminder of the importance of spiritual nourishment. In a world that often values productivity and busyness above all else, Mary’s decision to focus on her relationship with Jesus is a radical act of faith.

How to Cultivate a Heart Like Mary’s

  1. Prioritize Spiritual Growth: Make time for daily prayer, Bible study, and meditation. These practices will help you to connect with Jesus and deepen your understanding of His Word.
  2. Practice Mindfulness: Be present in the moment and focus on the blessings in your life. This can help you to reduce stress and anxiety and cultivate a sense of peace.
  3. Let Go of Perfectionism: Remember that you are not expected to be perfect. Embrace your flaws and imperfections, and trust that God loves you unconditionally.
  4. Serve Others: Serving others is a powerful way to express your love for God and your neighbor. It can also help you to put your own problems into perspective.
  5. Trust in God’s Timing: Remember that God is in control and His timing is always perfect. Trust that He has a plan for your life, and surrender your worries and anxieties to Him.
  6. Make Time for Solitude and Reflection: Carve out a specific time each day to be quiet and listen to God’s voice. This could involve prayer, meditation, journaling, or spending time in nature.
  7. Hope: Maintain hope in God’s promises and trust that He will work all things together for good. Remember that He loves you and has good plans for your life.

Let’s Reflect

I want to sit at Jesus’ feet. Cultivating a heart like Mary’s is more important than ever in a world that often feels chaotic and overwhelming. We can find peace and joy even during life’s challenges by prioritizing spiritual growth, practicing mindfulness, letting go of perfectionism, serving others, and trusting God’s timing.
