When What's Going in the World Consumes Us

By: Jenifer Metzger

So if you have been raised with Christ,
seek the things above, where Christ is,
seated at the right hand of God. Set your
minds on things above, not on earthly
things. For you died, and your life is
hidden with Christ in God. When Christ,
who is your life, appears, then you also
will appear with Him in glory.
Colossians 3:1-4 CSB

There is a lot going on in the world right now. We have the upcoming election with all that brings to our world and the opening ceremonies of the Summer Olympics, just to name a couple things.

It can be so easy to place our focus on what is in front of us, on the uncertainty of what we are facing. In fact, it is so easy to place on focus on what is in front of us to the point of losing sight of the Father.

Worry sets in. Doubt rears its ugly head. Lines get drawn in the sand and we are divided from not only strangers, but also neighbors, friends, and loved ones. The thing is, worry, doubt, fear, division, hatred, social media ranting, none of those will solve any problems. None of those will bring peace or unity.

We have to keep our eyes fixed firmly on God. He is the author and finisher of our faith. He is our true peace. And like all throughout history, no matter what happens in this world, no matter who our leader is, no matter what comes, God is in control. We can rest in the knowledge and peace of knowing God has this world in the palm of His hands.

When what is going on in the world begins to consume you, shut off the TV, put down your phone, and spend some time in the Word and in prayer. Lean into God and let Him fill your thoughts.

Looking unto Jesus, the author and
finisher of our faith, who for the joy
that was set before Him endured the
cross, despising the shame, and has
sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 12:2 NKJV

 Finally brothers and sisters, whatever
is true, whatever is honorable,
whatever is just, whatever is pure,
whatever is lovely, whatever is
commendable—if there is any moral
excellence and if there is anything
praiseworthy—dwell on these things.
Philippians 4:8 CSB

Father, forgive me for letting things of this world consume my thoughts and drag me down. Help me to keep my eyes fixed firmly on You, the author and finisher of my faith. Help me to trust in You and fill my mind with things that are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and commendable. And help me to be a light in a world filled with darkness. In Jesus name, Amen.

Discussion:
1. Do current events and issues consume you?
2. What do you do when happenings in the world take over your thoughts?
