Ever notice how we long to see beauty?
As the spring is coming upon us, I watch for signs the winter is over. As I keep a close watch on our yard, beauty can be found little by little as winter fades and spring begins to unfold:
The little sprouts of green grass.
Bunnies running and hopping around.
The return of robins as they poke for worms and begin to construct their nests.
The chirping of birds as they make their return.
The reddish hue of buds on our maple trees.
It’s as if the earth has come alive, and it has, all under the careful care of our God.
“The heavens are telling of the glory of God;
And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.”
(Psalm 19:1, NASB)
Beauty has been defined as “the quality or group of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or the mind” (merriamwebster.com).
And that is just it, a glimpse of beauty, whether seen by the eyes or breathed in as an aroma, brings pleasure to our souls. We need beauty every now and then. Beauty experienced by any of our senses brings a reminder of our Creator.
“The sweetest thing in all my life has been the longing — to reach the Mountain, to find the place where all the beauty came from …” (C.S. Lewis)
That longing, that place we seek to find, is satisfied as we find ourselves in Christ. C.S. Lewis further explains:
“If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.”
God places beauty all around us for the single purpose of drawing us to Himself. As we take note of the beauty in creation, we come to appreciate the Creator Himself. We long for Him, to be with Him.
May you be drawn to the beauty found in creation,
and be drawn ever so deeply to the Creator Himself.
Reflection:
What beauty are you noticing unfold around you lately? How does nature draw you to God?

That's one of the hardest parts of winter for me--the barrenness and lack of color. And one of the best parts of spring is when color starts showing up again outside and things start blooming. I suppose we appreciate them all the more because we've been without them for a while. I so agree that beauty points us to God.
