Working for His Glory

 By: Grace Metzger

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord,
not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an
inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
Colossians 3:23-24

One thing about me that I’m not necessarily proud of is the fact that I’m lazy. I really like relaxing, sleeping, watching TikTok, etc. I convince myself that I deserve 5 minutes of relaxing, 5 minutes turns into 30 minutes which turns into 1 hour which can easily turn into several hours. I love my job, but I prefer having a calm day at work where I do very little or not even going into work.

This was on my mind this month. After my promotion at work I had double the amount of work and less time to do it. I wasn’t a fan of this at first and been getting overwhelmed and frustrated. This resulted in wanting to just give up. Instead of giving up, I started praying for help. God led me to the verse in 1 Corinthians 10:31 “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

I looked into how I was living my life, not just at work but in every part of my life. How I handle ministry, my health, everything. Was I doing it all for the glory of God? The fact that I couldn’t answer with a yes made me sad.

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might,
for in the realm of the dead, where you are going, there is
neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom.
Ecclesiastes 9:10

After realizing that I wasn’t living every single part of my life for the glory of God, I started looking more into the Bible about work. And when I say work, I wasn’t specifically looking for Bible verse related to your job, but I was looking into verses about keeping up your house, doing ministry in the church, etc. That’s how I found Ecclesiastes 9:10. I love the first sentence in this verse, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might.”

I wanted to live like that. I want to people to say “That’s Grace, whatever she does she does it with all her might.” I want people to look at my life and be able to see a reflection of the glory of God. Being lazy is nice. Lounging around all day is nice. But living my life for the glory of God, not allowing my hands to remain idle but focusing on doing everything in my ability to ensure that when people see me, they see the joy that comes with a relationship with God, that is so much better then sitting on my phone in bed!

It’s easy to start losing focus on your life in an effort to relax. Relaxing isn’t even a bad thing. We need a little down time from time to time. But there is a vast difference between resting and becoming lazy. God is calling you to go and do His work. Don’t allow your laziness to get in your way! Stay focus and do His work for His glory!

Discussion Question: Do you struggle with over working yourself or find yourself struggling with laziness?
