But God proves
His own love for us in that
while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8
I have been saved for years, began attending church as soon as I was born, my parents were even pastors! But despite all of this, there has been one concept that has always been incredibly hard to accept about Christianity. That is that God is able to love me despite all my sins. I don’t think I’m the only one who struggles to understand how this is possible. How can God love someone who has sinned, who is broken?
Love consists
in this: not that we loved God,
but that He loved us and sent His son
to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.
1 John 4:10
This Bible verse in particular made the concept ten times harder for me. Cause not only does God love us even though we have sinned and fallen short, but He loves us even when we don’t love Him. Why? How?
I realized that I was looking at this situation through human eyes. God isn’t
like us. He doesn’t have the same love that we do; His love is more powerful
and able to endure more then we can even begin to comprehend. In fact, one of my
favorite verses is Romans 8:38-39. It talks about how neither life nor death,
not present or future things, no height nor depth, not any other thing can
separate us from God’s love.
God isn’t like us, His love isn’t conditional, His love
doesn’t go away, His love doesn’t hold grudges. Instead, because of His love we
are able to love others.
The one who
does not love does not
know God, because God is love.
1 John 4:8
Love is God main mission. It’s why He sent His son to die
for us, it’s why He create us, and it’s what He calls us to do. God is love.
That’s how He is able to love me in spite of everything. Not because it’s hard
work for Him but because it is literally who He is.
If you’re like me and had trouble figuring out how it was possible for God to love you even with your flaws, I’m calling you today to just accept His love. God loves you because He created you, He loves you because He forgave you, He loves you because He is love. I’m calling on everyone today to accept fully in your heart the Lord’s amazing love that He has for you.
