As a child, I remember watching Mr. Rogers on TV his gentle voice and warm smile drew me in. He was a beloved icon of children's television, but his influence extended far beyond just entertaining kids. His gentle spirit, kind heart, and unwavering faith in God made him a role model for people of all ages, and there are many valuable lessons that our children, grandchildren, and even we can learn from his example.
"All of us, at some time or other, need help. Whether we're giving or receiving help, each one of us has something valuable to bring to this world. That's one of the things that connects us as neighbors—in our own way, each one of us is a giver and a receiver." — Mr. Rogers
The first thing Mr. Rogers taught us the importance of being kind. He believed that every person has inherent value, and he went out of his way to make sure that everyone he met felt seen, heard, and loved. Our children can learn from his example by practicing acts of kindness in their own lives, whether that means giving a hug to a friend who is feeling down or simply saying hello to someone who looks like they could use a friendly face.
"How many times have you noticed that it's the little quiet moments in the midst of life that seem to give the rest extra-special meaning?" — Mr. Rogers
Mr. Rogers also modeled the importance of listening. He created a safe space on his show where children felt comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings, and he always took the time to really listen to what they had to say. Our children can learn from this by practicing active listening in their own lives, whether that means putting down their phone or video game and really engaging with a friend who is talking to them, or taking the time to listen to a family member who might just want to have a conversation with them.
"As human beings, our job in life is to help people realize how rare and valuable each one of us really is, that each of us has something that no one else has or ever will have something inside that is unique to all time. It's our job to encourage each other to discover that uniqueness and to provide ways of developing its expression." — Mr. Rogers
Finally, Mr. Rogers was a man of deep faith, and he never shied away from talking about his beliefs on his show. He believed that every person was a child of God, and he lived his life in a way that reflected that belief. Our children can learn from his example by cultivating their own faith and living out their beliefs in their everyday lives.
In Reflection
Mr. Rogers was a true inspiration, and there are many valuable lessons that our children can learn from his example. By being kind, listening well, and living out their faith, they can follow in his footsteps and make the world a better place. Don't forget, it isn't just the children who can learn something from this inspiring and encouraging man— So can we.
