Stop Sowing From an Empty Basket

"These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart. Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Bind them as a sign on your hand and let them be a symbol on your forehead. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your city gates."
~Deuteronomy 6:6-9

“It is no use for you to attempt to sow out of an empty basket, for that would be sowing nothing but wind.”

~Charles Spurgeon

As moms, one of our greatest missions in this life is to pour God’s Word into our children. We are to speak of it to them as we lie down and as we rise up, as we go about our daily lives, day in and day out. We are to train them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord and in the way that they should go.
But we cannot fulfill those responsibilities if we don’t know the Word ourselves. The same passage that tells us to share God’s Word with our kids naturally throughout the day (Deuteronomy 6) also says we are to hide God’s Word in our own hearts first.

And yet so often we don’t. We blame busyness or overwhelm or lack of theological training and knowledge. Though the reason may differ between us, the root issue is often the same: we just aren’t spending the time in the Word that we ought to be.

So, today, I want us to do something a little different. Share in the comments what your biggest struggle is right now regarding Bible reading and study. And then let’s encourage one another however we can to move beyond those struggles through Christ’s strength and by the power of His Spirit.

So, friend: what would you say is the biggest hindrance that is currently keeping you from being in the Word on a regular basis? Share below

Reflection Questions:
1) Am I trying to sow from an empty basket? How has that been going?
2) What changes is the Lord leading me to make?
3) How can I come alongside my sisters-in-Christ and encourage them to stop sowing from an empty basket? How can I be a help to them?
