Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up, "Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?" John 6:8-9—NIV
It was a busy day of ministry for Jesus. He'd been healing people suffering from ailments and diseases. He shared stories and parables with the crowd, giving them all of his attention.
As the day went on, Jesus became tired. He tried to slip away with His disciples, but the crowds followed Him anyway. Looking into the faces of all these people, Jesus felt compassion. He longed to gather each person close and whisper how precious they were to him.
Instead, He turned to his friends. "Let's feed these people." His disciples pointed out how much it would cost to feed the crowd. It would take almost half a year's wage, they said.
That's when a shy little boy tugged on Peter's clothes. He glanced down at the kid, who gestured for him to bend down. When Peter bent down, the boy whispered that he'd share his own lunch.
Jesus instructed the disciples and people to sit, then He gave a prayer of thanks. And the meal was multiplied—enough for 5,000 people with leftovers, too!
The disciples are contrasted with the little boy who brought what he had. They certainly had more than the boy, but they knew they didn't have enough, so they didn't give anything.
The little boy wanted to share and gave what little bit he had, which made all the difference. If we offer nothing to God, he will have nothing to use. But he can take what little we have and turn it into something extraordinary.
Here, Jesus took what a little boy offered and used it to accomplish one of the most monumental miracles recorded in the Gospels.
It can be hard when we feel the need is much greater than what we have.
Age is no barrier to Christ. Never think you're too old or young to serve him. Remember, God can and often does multiply your sacrifices.
Reflection
How does it make you feel that your resources might be limited, but God's provisions aren't?
When you think you have nothing to offer God, think again.
