Theology and Change in Your Life

“'See, I am the Lord’s servant,' said Mary. 'May it happen to me as you have said.' Then the angel left her."

~Luke 1:38

Have you ever wondered how Mary was so ready and willing to submit herself to God’s plan for her life? How it was that she excitedly agreed to carry the Son of God even though the result would be her likely being ostracized by her family and community, ridiculed, misjudged, and possibly even killed?


The reason was because she knew her theology. She knew her God. And that made all the difference in the world for her.


We see in the song she sings in Luke 1 that even though she lived in a time and culture where women were rarely educated, Mary had received a robust education in the things of God.


She knew His character.


She knew His heart.


She knew the history of what He had done for His people as well as the Messianic prophecies of what He would do.


She immediately surrendered and said “yes” to the unexpected call on her life because she knew her God. She knew He was faithful, loving, trustworthy, and good, so she willingly submitted herself to His call.


If you marvel at the faith, obedience, and willing surrender of others in their walk with the Lord, believing that you could never do what they are doing, it could be that you don’t truly know the God you claim to serve. It could be that it’s time for you to spend more time in the Word getting to know our great God. It will build up your faith like nothing else! 

Reflection Questions:

1) Could you say "yes" to an unexpected call from the Lord like Mary did? Why or why not?

2) Do you struggle to trust God and His good plan for you? If so, consider how you can make time to study the character of God. After all, you can't trust someone you don't know!

3) Is there a current call you know God has been extending to you that you have not wanting to say "yes" to? What is God calling you to do right now,  in this moment?
