Keeping the First Thing First

"All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work."

~2 Timothy 3:16-17

I hear it all the time - “I’m too busy to be in the Word.”

Have we forgotten what the Word of God is, dear friends? That it is the alive, active, and powerful words of God Himself? That it does not return void but always accomplishes what it is supposed to accomplish? That it is precisely what equips us for our daily lives and work - and that nothing else in all of creation - no book, course, training, or podcast and equip us like the Word can?

How might our view of singleness change if we prized time in the Word more? Maybe there would be less of a desperation for marriage and more of a calm, joyful resting in all God is in our lives?

How might we live out our marriages differently if we prioritized reading and studying the Word? Maybe there would be less fighting and complaining and more loving and serving?

How might we have our view of motherhood changed if we were actually in the Word in the midst of it? Maybe we would go from thinking we have to live for naptime and bedtime and instead view the work of mothering as the world-changing, anything-but-mundane work it actually is.

How would our work and ministries look different if we spent time in God’s Word every day? Maybe there would be less striving to get ahead and more walking by the Spirit.

No, it’s not that we are too busy to be in the Word. It’s that we are too busy and have too many roles and responsibilities NOT to be in the Word - for it is what equips us for all of life!

Reflection Questions:

1) Have you spent much time in the Word lately? If you were to do an assessment of your life as it is right now, how would that result correspond to the amount of time you have been in the Word lately?

2) What is keeping you from being in the Word? How can you change that?

3) When you actually have been in the Word, what benefits have you seen in your life?
