We Need a Right Perspective

"Teach us to number our days carefully
so that we may develop wisdom in our hearts." ~Psalm 90:12

Jonathan Edwards once prayed, "Lord, stamp eternity on my eyeballs." How we could all benefit from that same prayer being the desire of our own hearts in this time!

When your dreams aren’t coming true....

When you are so broken over the marriage struggles you keep hearing about from people both within and without your circles....

When you hear about the health problems being experienced by those you love....

When the work of motherhood feels insignificant and mundane....

When you’re belittled or made fun of because of your faith and standards....

When you’re wrongly chasing platform or popularity or prestige....

When you’re emotionally and physically exhausted....

When it feels like the old “When it rains, it pours” cliche is true....

When God clearly calls you to do something that other people think is crazy (because He didn’t speak to them about it - He spoke to YOU)

When people misjudge your heart and actions....

When it feels like the country is going to pot....

When a loved one is diagnosed with Covid....

When you lose your job....

When your life and plans are dramatically changed by a pandemic...

When week number 2,537 of raging political debates on social media is about to make you lose your ever loving mind...

When things feel so uncertain....

When you’re crying out to God for a spouse, a baby, another baby, a particular job, or a certain calling....

We need an eternal perspective. We need to have eternity stamped onto our eyes, causing us to see everything through that lens of what does and does not ultimately matter, what will and will not ultimately last, where our hope lies and where it doesn’t.

Today, friend, whatever it is you are facing, keep your eyes fixed on Christ. It will make a difference, and it will comfort your soul.

Reflection Questions

1. In what ways are you (or are you not) numbering your days?

2. In what areas of your life do you need to especially have eternity stamped to your eyeballs?

3. What is the Lord leading you to do in light of what you have just read?
