Making Time to Praise God

BySarah Geringer

I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all the marvelous things you have done.

Psalm 9:1 NLT

How often do you make time to praise God? This question isn't meant to make you feel guilty. Instead, it's a gentle reminder that praising God is an important part of our faith journey.

Praising God lifts our spirits. If you're like me, a lot of your prayer requests feel heavy. God wants us to carry all our burdens to him (Ps. 55:22) and cast our cares on him (1 Pet. 5:7). But he also longs to hear our praise, and he knows that our praise of him lifts us up.

The church as a whole suffers from a lack of praising God. Since our culture is so self-focused, our thoughts and feelings often stay stuck in the worldly realm and on temporal things. This can be true even within the church. But praise lifts our eyes up to the heavenly places and reminds us of God's unchanging character. It can be a great comfort to us when we feel low.

Yesterday I made time for praise in a simple way. As I waited on my son to take his written driver's exam, I pulled up praise songs on my phone and streamed them to my car stereo. Right there in the parking lot, I sang along with the song and felt my spirits lift.

You can make time for praise if you only have three minutes to spare. That's the average length of a praise song. You don't even need to have a great singing voice. If you're around others, it may be best to "sing along" in your heart. Use that little space simply to let your praises rise up to God with the music. Don't ask him for anything, and don't worry about what's going on with your life. Just praise him for who he is, and let your praise be a sweet song to the Lord.

I pray that today, God will prompt you to praise him. Go ahead and get your playlist ready. No matter what is going on in your life, you have reason to praise God. As our focus verse states, you can praise him with all of your heart because of the wonderful things he has done. May a moment of daily praise to God strengthen your faith.
