“Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.” ~James 3:13-18
This passage really struck me the other day, especially when I thought of it in light of all the infighting, name-calling, unrighteousness judgement, snarky attitudes, and more that I have been seeing take place among Christians all year.
Friends, in this passage, James is showing us unequivocally what godly wisdom looks like. And if the “wisdom” we share does not line up with this description, if it is not coming from a humble heart, if it is not first pure, gentle, willing to yield, peaceable, full of mercy, and meek, then it is not wisdom from God, no matter how biblical the truth you might be sharing is.
We are told time and time again by Paul that truth without love, faith without love, good works without love, are useless. You actually have to feel tangible love in your heart for the person you are speaking to and show that love clearly in the way you do speak, or it is not enough, does not profit anything, does not glorify God, does not serve others, and does not advance His kingdom.
Our snarkiness does not lead to anyone’s sanctification.
May we all remember that before we post on social media and before we respond to someone else’s posts.
