The God Who Wants to Walk and Talk With Us

It’s been close to thirty years ago that I first walked out the door of our house on that narrow country road. Putting one foot in front of the other I walked a full circle around our little town, right back to that same door of our house on that narrow country road. Day after day I put one foot in front of the other and walked that same loop, hoping to take some weight off my thirty-something year old body. Best of all, while that weight came off my body, weight of another kind that I had been struggling with came off my soul. I had been living with heaviness, a dark gray cloud hovering constantly over my head. Stuffed down soul wounds were like heavy sandbags around my heart. Day after day as I walked they began to lift. You see, as my feet were walking, my heart was talking to my Mighty Counselor. Here’s a little secret…He’s a God Who wants to walk and talk with us. He likes strolls in the cool of the evening with His most prized creation and meeting with ones full of confusion taking a walk down that old Emmaus roadhelping them to straighten out the crooked paths in their thinking.

Thirty years later I still walk most days, except now I walk out the door of our home in a suburban housing development. I put one foot in front of the other and walk three or so miles around my neighborhood back to that same door of our home in our suburban housing development. Day after day I walk, hoping to keep the weight off my sixty-something year old  body and keeping the weight of another kind off my soul. As my feet are walking, my heart is talking to my Mighty Counselor.

Here’s a little secret…He’s still a God Who wants to walk and talk with us. He likes to stroll with us in the cool of the evening or meet with us when we're full of confusion walking down our own Emmaus road. He helps us to straighten out the crooked paths in our thinking, healing those deep down soul wounds that living in this sin-broken world can cause and lifting those heavy sandbags from around our heart. He always has been and always will be  a God Who wants to walk and talk with us, His most prized creation. He always has been and always will be  our Mighty Counselor.

  1. Amazing to think how the God of all things desires to walk and talk with each of us. I am most grateful He does!

  3. I can't walk the miles that I use to so I walk around my 1 acre plot. Safer these days too or I go up to the cemetery and walk there. I like your idea that he walks with us. I talk with God during the day, but when I think about it, not sure I commune with him when I walk. Will start doing that. So true on the scrunched down, heavy sand bags on our soul. Reminds me of the song, He Walks With Me and He Talks With Me.

    1. That's a wonderful song! "And He tells me I am His own" is such an amazing and comforting truth.

  4. I too am a walker and in fact, walked a new-to-me path while visiting family in Northern Indiana today. I find this early morning time with God to be a blessing and a time of physical as well spiritual refreshment.
