Our Solid Rock

By: Joanne Viola

In Psalm 125, we find a message of hope. The psalmist compares believers with Mount Zion, a rock solid mountain found in Jerusalem. This sixth Psalm of Ascent brings us great insight when we feel as if our life is in upheaval.
  • We are secure. Those who trust in the Lord are as secure as Mount Zion; they will not be defeated but will endure forever” (Psalm 125:1, NLT). The word ‘trust’ means to “attach oneself to”. For the believer, this means we commit our days to Him and in so doing, remain unmovable in our faith.
  • We are surrounded by Him. Just as the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds his people, both now and forever” (verse 2, NLT). God Himself will guard and protect His own. His Presence is always with us.
  • We experience His goodness. O Lord, do good to those who are good, whose hearts are in tune with you” (verse 4, NLT). God pours out His goodness on those who keep step with Him. As our character and behavior is a reflection of His, He brings about goodness in our lives.
May we attach ourselves to God – our Rock and source of strength – in total reliance on His grace and goodness towards us.
“Faith puts God between us and our circumstances.” (Daniel Webster)

  1. I've been re-reading Peterson's A Long Obedience in the Same Direction, a commentary on the Psalms of Ascent, and I have grown a deep appreciation for this little collection of songs. I want to look at the surroundings in my own world and draw that same deep reassurance of God's presence and protection.

  2. What a great reminder that God is our rock. We an depend on Him to be our solid ground amidst the shifting sands of this pandemic’s uncertainties. I’ve been writing about a Psalm too! Here is the link if interested
