Are You Feeling Burdened?

By: Sarah Geringer

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

Matthew 11:28-30 NLT

Are you feeling burdened? I am. But God's hope and peace is here for us today.

Today I'm facing a big workload, and all three of my children are home with me. It's so much harder to get things done when they're here (though I LOVE being home with them).

Physical rest is a long way off for me. My day starts bright and early before 6:00 a.m., and rest can be 15 or more hours away. When I think of all the responsibilities between now and the end of the day, it's easy to feel burdened.

Jesus says this:
Take my yoke upon you...it is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.

"What? You're adding MORE weight to me, Jesus?" That's what I want to say when I read the verse the first time.

I think the "burden" he gives me is Obedience. It feels light compared to real burdens.

I need to wear the yoke of Diligence, Focus, and Perseverance today. He'll carry one side, and I'll carry the other. I can keep praying throughout the day to get a fresh dose of his encouragement to keep going. Then my mental, emotional, and spiritual rest at the end of the day will be that much sweeter and more peaceful.

Maybe you're carrying a heavier burden than what I'm holding today. Please leave a prayer request in the comments so we can help lift that burden up in prayer. Know that as you pray throughout the day, God will help carry it for you!

Questions for you:

What kind of burdens are you carrying? Mental, emotional, relational, physical, or spiritual?

What type of "burden" is Jesus asking you to bear, so he can share your load?

What can you do today to make rest deeper and more rewarding later tonight or later this week (the Sabbath)?

  2. Thank you Sarah! It's a hard season we find ourselves in. For me it's just mental strength to keep going with work and small children without neglecting my relationship with God. Thank you for your post and prayers 🙏
