7 Scriptures to Help You Beat Winter Blues

By: Sarah Geringer

Are you struggling with winter blues?

For many years, I've struggled with feeling blue in January and February. The first day of spring can't come fast enough for me. I'm always rooting for the groundhog to announce that spring will arrive early this year.

On my blog, I've written a 4-part series on beating the winter blues. The series has lots of practical tips about how you can fight winter blues. You can access the first post HERE. Today, I'd like to add key scriptures that you can meditate on to beat the winter blues.

By meditating on God's Word, you can get through the winter with greater hope and joy.
Using the living power of God's Word, you can transform your thoughts from negative and dull to hopeful and vibrant, even if the skies stay grey.

Here are seven scriptures to help you, one for each day of the week:

You light a lamp for me. The Lord, my God, lights up my darkness.
Psalm 18:28 NLT

For you are the fountain of life, the light by which we see.
Psalm 36:9 NLT

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.
Isaiah 9:2 NIV

Even the wilderness and desert will be glad in those days.
The wasteland will rejoice and blossom with spring crocuses.

Yes, there will be an abundance of flowers
    and singing and joy!
The deserts will become as green as the mountains of Lebanon,
as lovely as Mount Carmel or the plain of Sharon.
There the Lord will display his glory,
    the splendor of our God.

Isaiah 35:1-2 NLT

In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
John 1:4-5 NIV

Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”
John 8:12 NLT

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.
Ephesians 5:8 NIV

Do you see the hope in each one of these scriptures? Write them out and think deeply about them each day. You can make them into prayers, post them in highly visible places, and even create your own songs from them. When the winter blues drag you down, turn to God's Word for hope and encouragement.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the gift of your Word.
I confess that sometimes grey clouds and cold winds dampen my mood.
Jesus, you know my weaknesses, but through you I can be strong.
Help me overcome winter blues with the power of your Word.
I trust that if I meditate on your Word, you will transform my thoughts.
I thank you for the hope and encouragement you are offering to me.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
