How to Fight Spiritual Battles

By: Sarah Geringer

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
1 Peter 5:8 NIV

Spiritual battles are real, friend. We have an enemy who prowls around us every day, looking to discourage, defeat and devour us. Today, I want to shed light on how we can fight spiritual battles for God's glory.

There are three Old Testament stories of how God's people fought against their enemies. These stories hold truths that we can apply to our spiritual battles in today's world. Here are the three examples to which I'm referring:

1. Joshua vs. Jericho. How did they defeat the city? They marched around it in silence for six days, then on the seventh day blew trumpets and gave a loud shout. The walls of the city instantly fell down, and the Israelites conquered the city.

2. Gideon vs. Midianites. God reduced Gideon's army from 32,000 men to 300 men. Then Gideon and his men blew trumpets, broke clay jars, and shouted while holding torches. The entire Midianite army turned on itself in confusion, and Gideon's men soundly defeated them.

3. Jehoshaphat vs. Moabites and Ammonites. King Jehoshaphat led the people of Judah in a battle. Before the battle, Jehoshaphat commanded the people to sing praises to God, and the pagan armies destroyed one another.

What do these three stories have in common? God used foolish things to shame the proud. The trumpets, shouts, clay jars, and songs didn't have any power in themselves. God chose to use weak things to fight the strong, and his glory shone forth!

How can you apply this knowledge to your spiritual battles? Instead of worrying, fretting and fearing, put all your trust in God. Ask him to use whatever you have, even if your faith is as small as a mustard seed, as weapons against your spiritual enemies.

Use these methods inspired by the Old Testament stories.
1. March in prayer around a physical location of your battleground, trusting God to secure the victory for you.
2. Speak Scripture in a loud shout, claiming God's promises before Satan and his angels.
3. Praise God in song, using the same words that the people of Judah used before their battle.

If you are facing spiritual battles, you can fight back like God's people fought against their enemies. They fought back from a position of trust, because they knew they were too weak and small to fight the battle on their own. But they believed God was strong enough to handle the battle on their behalf. He will do the same for you in your battles, friend!

Here's a prayer to encourage you today:

Heavenly Father,
I praise you for helping me fight spiritual battles.
You never leave me nor forsake me, even when Satan attacks me.
Help me fight back in faith, trusting you to secure the victory for me.
In Jesus' name, Amen.

Reflection questions:

1. In which situation do you most often face spiritual battles?

2. In what ways will you choose to trust God in those battlefields?

I am fighting a battle through my son right now and have been feeling a little over powered or mostly inefficient as a mother,I see your post as a sure sign that Our Lord hears my weaknesses and has sent me the "AMMO" I needed to stand firm and keep battling through prayer and his guidance, awaiting my sons victory when My Lord prevails!!
