3 Prayers to Pray Over Your Home

By: Jenifer Metzger

Home.

That one word should bring a smile to our face. It should invoke peace and happiness. It should bring up joyous memories.

However, often our homes feel stressful. There is so much going on. So much to do. So much noise. If you have ever seen the movie Marley & Me, there is a scene where the husband gets home from work and stands there looking at the chaos of home through the window. He appears to dread going in. I never want to dread going home. I never want my husband or kids to dread coming home. I want our home to be our haven.

A wise woman builds her home,
but a foolish woman tears it down with her own hands.
Proverbs 14:1

Building a haven for my family doesn't mean it will always be quiet. The truth is, my home is rarely quiet. Three teenagers and four dogs make sure of that! It doesn't mean the house will always be clean. Our home is lived in. And it doesn't mean everything will always be perfect. We live a very real life and real life is messy in every way. What it does mean however, is that I need to continually be in prayer for my home.

Today I want to share three prayers that I regularly pray over my home.

But as for me and my household,
we will serve the Lord.
Joshua 24:15

Father, I pray that You would be the very center of my home. I ask that You would be very real to my family. Let us know You, see You, and feel You. Let everything that we do, say, and think center around You. Help my family to be a family that wholeheartedly serves You. Amen.

Then My people will dwell in a peaceful place,
in safe and secure dwellings
Isaiah 32:18

Father, I pray that my family will live in peace. I pray that Your peace will settle on our home. I ask that when we sleep at night, our sleep is peaceful and we wake up rested. I pray that conflict is quickly and calmly resolved. Help my family to be at peace in all ways. Amen.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, and self-control. The law is not
against such things.
Galatians 5:22

Father, I pray the fruits of the Spirit to settle onto my family. Help the fruits to envelope us and all that we do. Help us to deal with each other in love and patience. Help us to be faithful to You and each other. And help us to be self-controlled, even when it is hard. Let us be known by our fruits. Amen.

What are other verses and prayers you pray over your home?

  3. Those are great aspects to pray for. Something I'm trying to remember to pray for my family is that they'll see God's hand at work in their lives. Even when circumstances are trying, I pray they'll appeal to Him, watch for His answer, trust that He's allowed the issue for a reason.

My post this week is inspired by a Christian novelist friend who was advised by two Christian publishing professionals to take the Christian content out of his book. Some Christian authors are going to the general market rather than "preaching to the choir," I share some good reasons to keep preaching to the choir: https://barbarah.wordpress.com/2019/08/26/dont-stop-preaching-to-the-choir/
