Peace, if there's one quality we long for at Christmastime, it's peace. A mind and heart at peace is a wonderful thing. Yet, peace can seem illusive under the best of circumstances. Add the current events of our sin twisted world to the mix, and peace can seem impossible. There's a lot of stuff to be fearful about.
It's interesting Jesus' use of words in John 14:27. He doesn't coax or cajole us to not be troubled or fearful, He instructs us to not let ourselves, to stop allowing ourselves, to be troubled or afraid. That sounds a bit insensitive, a bit like telling someone to "just suck it up and be tough". Except it's not, because Jesus precedes His instruction by telling His followers that He's "bequeathed" something to them, something to us. He's given us, left to us, His own peace. Since He is the Son of God, His peace is based on the truth that His Father is in control, no matter how out of control this world appears to be. His peace is rooted deeply in the knowledge that His Father loves His children and promises to never ever leave them or let go of them. His peace is unshakeable, immovable, because it's based on rock solid confidence in God's care for us, based on perfect trust in Him. Jesus has given us His peace. It's not just some fleeting feel good emotion, it's peace that can rule our heart and mind in all circumstances. That's the kind of peace I need. How about you?
