Tomorrow is my favorite holiday that I look forward to every year.
Thanksgiving.
As I write this, the smell of pumpkin pie is wafting through the air, and members of my family are busy throughout the house making preparations for the special day.
Cleaning and more baking will happen tomorrow in order to make everything just right for the arrival of family and friends.
In years past I've gotten a little too overwhelmed with making sure things were perfect; so much so, that by the time everyone arrived, I was exhausted and didn't enjoy myself at all.
We can see the same thing happening in God's Word as we read the story of Mary and Martha.
As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
- Luke 10:38-42
In this story we can see Martha busy around her home making sure everything was just perfect for Jesus. However, in doing this she was missing out on the "main event." Jesus even tells her to stop focusing on so many things, and focus on what matters most, Him.
As you busy yourself around your home, don't let your "to-do's" get in the way of the center of attention being on Him. It doesn't have to all be perfect, it doesn't have to all get done.
Tomorrow, enjoy the special moments with family and friends as you breath in deep the spirit of the season of thankfulness. Slow down and take time to be grateful for things that matter most in life, with the main important one being the King.

ReplyDeleteGreat, timely message! I have often joked that I run around in my *Martha shoes* during the holiday season. And truly, don't we sometimes miss the important stuff when we do that?! Let's remember Mary, and how she focused on the One Thing - Jesus! - and how that made all the difference! (Besides, Martha shoes are way too tight...)
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving to you and yours! May your day be filled with faith, family, friends, fellowship...OK, and lots and lots of food!!
GOD BLESS!
This post made my kids and I laugh, because we're amazed by God. We were just talking earlier in the day about Mary and Martha because my mother-in-law is here visiting and she was going through my recipes for today's Thanksgiving meal and it was driving me crazy because I want things just perfect and I want her out of the kitchen. So, the kids and I were discussing(out of her earshot) how I'm like Martha. So, thanks for this post, as another reminder of what today should be about.
