Today's fruit is joy.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
Galatians 5:22-23
Joy is the emotion of great delight and happiness. Now, let's be honest, we will not be happy 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Not in marriage, not in life. Things happen and we are humans. While we are not happy, we can be joyful.
We often explain joy to kids like this: happiness is a reaction to the immediate. You are happy with something happening now. But joy is the emotion of the eternal. Knowing we have a future with Jesus gives us joy even if we are not happy with something right this second.
We may not be happy that our husband is late in coming home from work, but we can be joyous that he is working to support our family. We may not be happy that our husband is snoring so loudly at night, but we can be joyous that he is getting much needed rest. We may not be happy that he left his shoes out again, but we can be joyous that he has the physical ability to move and need those shoes.
Even when you are not happy with your husband, or happy in general, find reasons to be joyful. God has given you a friend and lover all rolled into one with your husband. That is a reason for joy!
